Procreation, is a fundamental function of even the simplest non-living systems.
stellar fusion creates offspring... more elements. Energy and particles communicate events
,coordinate the reproduction of stellar events by sentient life forms who eventually learn to
understand then duplicate and then direct macro scale events.

Until we find evidence otherwise, it is assumed that the universe is the result of some event
of procreation and struggles through a 30-100 billion "year" existence seeking the ways and
means to regenerate and procreate its own image.

So procreation is likely a fundamental organ of renewal. We pre-existing struggle with the
proposition .... fuse parts or all of our consciousness with others? Some will gain new
consciousness and experience a re-birth through the process. Some would rather end their
existance than loose their individuality. Star trek does a bit of a superficial job dealing
with the conflicts between individuality and co-joined consciousness (singular human vs trill,
binar, chorus, borg). Given its need to entertain that might be overlooked.
New sentients "birthed" are a necessary element of evolution. There will always be the need
for a clean slate. Be it elements of creation, organisms, humans, AI's , super-galactic size
"Brains" running millions of earth size simulations with concurent
analysis and subtle "management" , or even universe size and scope intelligence ,
procreation will still be integral. After all , a universe sized intelligence looking down
the pipe at eventual death in 15-30 billion "years" will want to ensure that if death cannot
be defeated , that death will result in a pre-planned series of events that births a new
universe pre-programmed to reproduce sentience.

For those who believe "god" does play dice, the lurking feeling that matter has a fundamental
sentience makes for a ghost of fatalism.
Be it a "Big Bang" or "collision of Dimensional Branes" that constitutes the orgasm of
universal reproduction, it is the final and most fundamental act of procreation imaginable
to the consciousness
of the "wee timerous beastie" that we call human.
