       Did you ever hear the story about the California towns back in the 30s
where a cop would grab a military guy on his way back to the base and hold
him for "investigation?" Then as soon as he was officially AWOL they would
turn him over to the military. At that time the Navy at least paid a reward
for returning AWOLS.
       I am told Ernest King put a stop to that. At least for a time and
place.

BTW, you forgot to mention that for career men -- you can go aboard a new
base and in a half hour be brought up to speed on the chow, the pay, the
treatment and what hotels have recreational facilities or what ever interests
you. Within a day or two you will have hooked up with an old "shipmate" and
been brought into a social circle of guys you knew before. You will have
liberty buddies and within a week have the beginings of a new circle of
dates. LOL
