It is a strange thing but when I was in the military we received orders we
never got to cut our own. I also followed enough of world war two to know
that Hollywood stars and other prominent Americans had to fight like the
dickens to get assigned to regular duty like other GIs. Some few made it --
Clark Gable (waist gunner on a B17 if my memory serves) and Jimmy Stewart
(bomber pilot) -- after fighting like the dickens as I said before. Stewart
go stuck at some remote base in the U. S. for months training other pilots.
The reason, the deep thinkers that ran everything were scared of the effect
on national morale if one of those well known people were killed. Glen
Miller, the band leader, was killed in what was apparently an aviation
accident and we still remember so maybe the deep thinkers were right.
The list of those that quietly got side tracked is endless and I will
not embarrass those folks by listing their names.
But the character that wrote "chickenhawks" didn't know that and
choose to tell us -- did he?
