At my first highschool, a rude, stupid, low-life,
poor-white trash institution of lower learning called
"Armuchee H.S." for the Armuchee community NorthWest
of Rome, Georgia, mostly known for drunks, road races,
bootleggers, stolen cars and abysmal stupidity, there
was this one guy who stood out for having the quality
of empathy. He didn't go along with the appearances
rule everything mode.

Unfortunately, his refusal to go along with whatever
was in fashion resulted in him being caught by the
janitor in his broom closet having sex allegedly with
a certain "Abbie," whose distinctions to my knowledge
consisted of being truly abysmally physically
unattractive and having the rep of school whore.
Actually, Abbie seemed like a nice person, but anyone
who dared to talk to her, or even smile at her was
branded for life.

So this poor guy was now "Broom-room-Abbie." Or just
Broom-room. Or, most frequently, just "Abbie."
Nobody even gave a second thought after the names
caught on. I and everyone else - don't recall if the
teachers went along, but it wouldn't surprise me as
most of them were a good fit for the school and
community - called him "Abbie" from then on.

Then I managed to escape to the "intellectual" HS in
the area (hallaluyah!), and shortly after this guy
showed up and without even thinking, I called him
"Abbie." He called me aside and asked me to PLEASE
not do that again, as he had had to leave Armuchee to
get away from it. I cringe now just to think about
it. Of course I never called him that again.
