I have helped set one up (new construction on 2
acres)... and on my current job, while planting a
rhododendron I accidently cracked one of the pipes for
their sprinkler system, so I had to repair the break.
In addition they had two old valves rusted shut, so I
had to replace those also. It's fairly easy.

Any reasonably competent human with good tools can
install and maintain a home sprinkler system. I think
the hardest parts are getting the initial design right
and actually digging the trenches for the pipes and
wires.

A good home improvement store will have everything you
need, including help with the design and advice on
potential pitfalls.
