I'm not trying to excuse the killing of children but I think we can explain
it. It's easy for us to make moral judgments now that we are safe, but it
would not be so easy 60 years ago when half the world was trying to kill the
other half. It turned out that the fire bombing of Dresden was a mistake
because it probably shortened the conflict by very little, but at the time
while engulfed in the fog or war that must have been far from clear, and
after going through 5 years of hell as he did I'm not at all sure I would
not have done the same thing. War is a nasty business, Hitler's was of
extermination doubly so. In 1940 Churchill was almost certain Briton
was going to be invaded so he planed to drop poison gas on the beaches.
That may seem shocking but when you think about it those solders
wanted to kill you, kill your family, kill everyone you knew, kill your
entire civilization and plunge the world into a new dark age. I know
what my decision would be in that situation, I'd gas them without mercy
and if I thought anthrax would help I'd use that too. There is no doubt
the man had many faults but the ultimate question is, would the world
be better off today if Winston Churchill had never been born?
I think the answer is a resounding NO!
