The Plot Thickens

Well, if you don't hear from me for a while (or ever),
here's a possible, though unlikely, reason:

On the Friday before my motorcycle accident which I
described in an earlier post, someone who I won't
identify, altho the information will be available
elsewhere, should anything happen to me, said
something very puzzling to me, which sent a chill down
my spine at the time, although I had no idea why.

"Goodbye, Phil." Not "good night," or "have a good
week-end." This person said this with such a note of
sadness in the voice that I wondered what it could be
about. This Monday another person approached me and
told me that my accident was not an accident at all.
This person makes outrageous jests all the time, so I
took it as such, altho I had already had some thoughts
of my own in that direction.

For the past two weeks at work, I have not had access
to the web at all, as they brought in a temp and
assigned her to the only computer normally available
for me to check the site. I have never been given
direct access to the web where I work, even though I
have done their website from the start in '98 to now -
over 450 pages, all hand-coded by me, with hundreds of
product photos, almost all done by me. Almost
everyone else in the company has direct web access,
and, in fact, my machine is already connected via the
intranet.

Meanwhile, I have been spending most of my time at
work for two weeks now updating and refining the
company website - on my own machine - and no-one has
said a thing to me.

Today, however, I overheard the President's relative
discussing some kind of contract with a web design
firm. This is a guy who should be flipping hamburgers
or installing car stereos maybe, but because of
blood.... Anyway, he hates me because almost every
time he goes up against me on some job issue, he ends
up looking like a fool. He would particularly like to
take away the web design and turn the site into
something to impress his gaming buddies instead of the
extremely high ranked commercial nuts and bolts site
that it has been until now.

So, not a word to me, and the general manager even
telling me yesterday to make sure that the site is
updated with the new products. (I then usually send
the site changes to the President's relative, who then
eventually, sometimes two months later, gets around to
uploading to the server, usually never checking to see
if it has been correctly uploaded.)

Tonight: decided to check the site from the library.
Not there! Instead, a completely foreign page appears
with CGI links that the library computer refuses to
follow. When I start checking the various product
links via google, they're all gone.

OOps! That's a cool $million down the drain, right
there, without any further work. This site has had
literally about 50 major keywords in its product
category that put it on page one, often number one, in
every major search engine. Gone, gone, gone....

So, what's next? Perhaps you'll be hearing from me...
