Yes, I think comparisons between any Western nation today and
the Third Reich are premature. In the 1960s, a huge number of
people thought that it was all over, with the way that Nixon
was operating and the various perceived infringements on liberties.
Often the name of the US was spelled "Amerika", to emphasize what
many people thought was occurring.

I think that you've identified the main mechanism here, although
of course the future is never certain, and, as they say, the
price of liberty is eternal vigilance.
