The most important holiday, in Italy, after Christmas and Easter is
"Ferragosto", on August 15.

This holiday - "Feriae Augusti" - dates from 18 B.C. to honour the
first Roman Emperor Augustus and originally lasted for all the month
of August.

The most important religious celebration for the Romans during this
month was on August 13. This was the day dedicated to the Goddess
Diana who was Goddess of the forests, the lunar cycles and
maternity.

On this feast owner and slave could worship as equals at the temple
on the Aventine Hill. All year round women left gifts in this temple
in the hope of having a safe and joyous birth for their babies.
