Yeah, but. I have worked side by side with PhDs for most of my
adult life. Very generally speaking, they write better research
papers than I do and I, again generally speaking, produce and
implemented better designs, algorithms and solutions in less time.

Yes, which is why I didn't go for that. Alao I didn't get
around to college until I already had people to support. And
for some reason, every time I learned a bunch of cool stuff I
just had to go out and build something with it. I love learning
and pushing the envelope. Many times I have wondered if I would
have been happier as an academic since I always tend toward the
bleeding edge. But it really was a drag having your mind
exploding with new information, ideas, designs and so on and not
having enough money at the end of the week to afford a beer and
half a pizza.
