A really good start to fixing problems with the US prison system would be to
stop locking up so many people. If your govt stopped expensively ruining
non-criminal's lives, it might have more resources free to do something
useful with the rest.
On a tangent, heading off somewhere back toward the original subject, don't
you find it amusing that prisoners are doing the lowliest work for large
corporations? With the direction corporate america is presently taking,
they'd probably be better off farming out upper executive roles to the
prison sweatshops. Hell, there are probably a good percentage of highly
qualified people available by now...
