I was just talking with a friend who knows everything
- well, it seems that way, sometimes - and we got onto
the subject of the prison-industrial complex, how the
prison guards union is the biggest and most
influential lobbiest in California, and how so many of
the telephone sales, etc., are actually handled by
inmates, at which point he mentioned that one of the
biggest buyers of prison labor is good old MicroSoft.
I haven't had time to check this out yet, but it
sounds plausible. He worked for a long time for a
major computer sales outfit, and claimed that all
those nice shrink-wrap packages got that way courtesy
of people making a buck or two a day.
