In reply to Greg Burch's post re active suits for
protection:
Yeah, I had some similar thoughts years ago. In fact,
just yesterday I stopped by the local Rhino truck bed
lining place to ask them about a super suit -
non-active but highly surviveable. I think they were
the local outfit that was recently written up for
their ultra-tough lining that is now seeing military
applications. It is actually tougher than the trucks
they spray it on, and people are researching it for
earthquake retrofitting as well.
Anyway, it seems that if I can bring them a mold -
like maybe a full torso mold - then they can give me a
batman-style piece of body armor. I don't think it
will stop bullets - at least until I combine it with
embedded titanium wire or ring armor - but it will
absorb an incredible amount of road rash. (A few
years back, I lost it on the 91 late at night in the
rain when a really lousy cheap rear tire just totally
went into no-friction hydroplaning. I skidded on my
back for about 1/4 mile from the fast lane all the way
to the curb. Fortunately, I was wearing a backpack
with an aluminum alloy frame - the old style you used
to see everywhere. I abraded about 1/2" of metal off
the frame. It was really exciting, like some truly
bizarre Disney ride. Seemed to last forever.
Fortunately the highway was virtually empty.)
I had the same experience of feeling like my reflexes
were failing a few years back. Then I started my bag
throwing regime. Now I'm doing four bags
simultaneously and usually catching all four - really
quick, too. So my reflexes are better overall I think
- at 53 - than ever before in my life. I can really
move fast now, without thinking about it.
Unfortunately my healing speed probably has not improved...
