Not difficult to explain. We've certainly exterminated or outcompteted
all other hominids and apes that trod too much into our particular
natural niche. It's only logical that those which survived the last
hundred thousand years did so by not being competetive with us in
riverine/wetland/coastal environments, ergo they would not have any need
of a diving reflex, and thus the reflex atrophied.
