Mickey Mouse first hit the screen in 1928 so he should have entered the
public domain in 2003 but Disney gave 6.3 million dollars in campaign
donations in 1997 and 98 and by pure coincidence in 1998 congress decided to
extend Disney's copyright by another 20 years. It's interesting that in the
1930's Disney took stories from the 19'th century like Snow White and
Sleeping Beauty and turned them into something new and original and the
world is a richer place because of it, however even after 75 years Disney
will stop anybody trying to do the same thing to Mickey Mouse.
