Edward Clarke in 1873 argued in his influential book: _Sex in Education_
that the rigors of higher education would cause women to suffer from
such dire problems as prolapsed uteri, menstrual disturbances, hysteria
and (perhaps most horrible of all) "abnormally active cerebration." I.e.
pursuing higher education would cause their reproductive organs to
atrophy and they would be unable to bear children.
