Again, this has not been my experience. Let me put it this way: with a single exception, everyone in my family is a Democrat, moderate or liberal. Almost all my friends are Democrats or Independents with leftist leanings. None of them are against "frankenfoods", wind energy (in fact, wind energy is a major issue in my part of the country- it could be a major economic boon for South Dakota), or hydrogen powered cars. Some of them think that space exploration is a waste- but then again, both of the chapters of the National Space Society that I've attended meetings of were dominated by pro-space Democrats (and, in the case of one of the groups, the chapter president was, strangely enough, a Green). They tend to have mixed feelings about nuclear energy, but they'd almost universally agree that it's a better option than coal. I'm not big on millitary weapons research myself- I'd agree that the money would be better spent on schools, hospitals- and, if we really feel that we need to give the defense industry more corporate welfare, why don't we direct more of that cash towards space development? The same technology that powers our millitary powers our space initiatives, after all.
In your characterization presented here, you are talking about the extreme left, whom almost all the liberals and leftist moderates I know disagree with. I have a problem with people who take the extreme voices (a tiny minority) and try to portray them as the popular opinion.
