Spike, there is a clear line where the portions under liquid nitrogen is
below the boiling point of LN, whereas the portions above it as above
that temperature. This can produce uneven cooling, resulting in stress
fractures and massive cracking. This area of damage will slowing spread
as the LN level lowers. It might even be bad enough to disintegrate
structures above the LN line as it lowers.
