Re: Mandatory labeling

I hope this post will get picked up by Harvey and John
with respect to some of the "SLANDER CHALLENGES".

I faded out of the GM discussions because I had reached
certain conclusions.

(a) That Harvey and I generally agreed that labelling GM
foods was reasonable, but that we might differ on the
implementation strategies for accomplishing that in
    the most productive fashion.
(b) That the libertarian core, perhaps represented by Mike
Lorry and Reason, would most likely argue that there should
be no mandated labelling. Instead that function should be
    replaced by private sector activities.

I have no problem with (b) but being a pragmatic person one has
to deal with paths from (a) to (b). When a path exists to
(b) I will certainly investigate it. When there is a
libertarian enclave based on the principles that Mike and
Reason propose, I will look closely at it and determine
whether life expectancy in such an enclave is greater than
that of the regulation encumbered enclaves in which we
currently find ourselves.

Until that time, I must be realistic, and make do with what I
have available to myself.

So I think Harvey and John are becoming a little overinflamatory
with respect to their positions regarding "mandatory labeling".
GM-Labels on packages should certainly be much less of a concern
than causes of heart disease or cancer and/or cures for such
diseases given current major causes of death.

Let us be pragmatic here and channel our energies into those
efforts that can be most extropic.

Robert
