I used Bryce 5; it great for this kind of scenes but a bit weak in
modeling in general. The flies were simple symmetrical lattices (i.e.
small landscapes) I painted in the program, the trees were primitives I
adjusted and then it was mainly a matter of putting everything in its
place.
Otherwise, I like to make textures and images using XenoDream
(http://www.xenodream.com/) or generate objects using matlab.
