I've been looking for that story for decades.

It was in an anthology I had to read at school. It so struck me at the time,
that it became one of the spurs for my interest in science and philosophy. I
had always thought it was an Asimov or Clarke short story, but I was unable
to
find it among their works, and now I know why...

I wonder if Douglas Adams took an influence here for 'Deep Thought' in the
Hitch-Hikers Guide?
