2002-06-13 Saint Louis University press release - First electronic eye implant performed

A Saint Louis University neurosurgeon, Dr. Kenneth R. Smith Jr., working with the Dobelle Institute, became the first US doctor to implant an electronic eye device that allows a blind patient to see. Two patients, previously totally blind, have already learned to use the system well enough to slowly drive cars on private property and to walk freely around a laboratory while avoiding obstacles and are able to look outside and see a tree.

While currently crude, this is on the path to future higher quality direct visual interfaces.
