This is funny because I used to walk to work several years ago and had
airplane shadows pass over me all the time. I wondered what the odds
were, but there was a major international airport within about 15 km of
my job, so they must have been high. You just have to get the airplane
between you and the sun to get the effect -- of course, on a clear
enough day. How could I tell? The planes were much lower, of course,
so once I saw the shadow, I often heard and saw the plane without much
effort.
