I sure wasn't off the radar in Canada. It was the lead or second main news
story for a week, with many follow-up reports later, on all channels. Pretty
much everyone here believes that many Canadian farmers will go bankrupt it the
subsidies cannot be matched by the thier own government. Its a very sad state
of affairs, and a big hole in NAFTA.
This is coming right on the heels of US trade sanctions against Canadian
Lumber, in the form of a large import tariff. These tariff charges will not
only put several Canadian lumber operations out of business, but also raise
the price of lumber in the US... and the price of houses, and anything else
made of softwood.
These are the kind of the hypocritical protectionist policies that kill
innovation, and reduce wealth for everyone. No country is 'lilly white' when
it comes to this kind of thing... but that doesn't make it a good idea!
