Unless said components are dead. But I agree, you can't outrun a
Singularity. Early pioneers do look a lot like flies in amber, frozen in
transit.
It will take a while to breed the fastest replicators. There are several
strategies possible, with different tradeoffs (lightweight replicators for
short hops, heavyweight for longer hops, self-propelled and photonically
driven, hybrid, etc). Given what little we know, it appears impossible to
predict how a mature pioneer front will look like.
