I remember in college playing 'Command & Conquer' in my dorm living room with a roomie watching. He was horrified at how I could leave behind several of my paltry infantry to be slaughtered by an enemy advance. In my view it was more important to immediately prepare my counterattack, and not risk the return of those troops which might cause the enemy to make a beeline for my base before I was ready!

I laughed at his comments since it was only a 'game', but he admitted to feeling very unsettled about what I did despite that fact. He told several friends entering the dorm what a unfeeling butcher I was! I almost asked him if he felt those soldiers on the screen had some sort of virtual sentience which perhaps we did not recognize as existing.

It's a good thing he never saw me play as the Russian side in 'Red Alert'! I would use the classic Soviet strategy of massive forces aimed at a weak point, and I would not relent until my casualties were horrendous and things were pointless for me.

I love real-time strategy games!
