Hear Hear!
I've noticed that almost all the good stories are anime, comics, or books nowadays. The Golden Age of television is over, and people with real stories to tell go elsewhere. Ocassionally a really gripping tale might be told in a movie (Boondock Saints, The Professional, Amele, Life is Beautiful, et al) but I find the best things come through where things are less by committee and more about the narrative.
Webcomics often have wonderful and touching stories, while others are relentlessly silly and pointless, yet fetching.
Books still have the lock on creativity and freedom, but I expect that to be broken soon with more graphic novels and anime-like shows coming out.
I just wanted to chime in here, the really *cool* storylines I've followed the last couple of years have all been away from the telescreen, and in my hands, or on the Web.
