There certainly is something nefarious in it. Teaching children that
they can be made responsible for obligations because *other people*
choose for them to be obligated will indeed turn those children into
good citizen-subjects, but this shouldn't be construed as a good thing.
[Speaking as someone who is currently childless,] I would say that
kids should be taught that they are only responsible for what they
themselves do and want. To a child, the distinction between "chores"
and "gimme your lunch money" would seem quite blurry.
