I recall some time ago a competition held in the late 90's where major
computer maufacturers volunteered thier systems to resist any attempt at
penetration; others attempted to break into them. I can't remember the exact
outcome suffice to say that the best machine there - an IBM mainframe of
some sort (I think) resisted the longest and took twenty something hours to
access, none held. The machine that broke it cost some $30,000 dollars or
so.

I thought at the time that it made the concept of data security against
any well equipped individual a farce. Of course one acknowledges this
involved hardware in the public domain, or soon to be as most were
experimental and designed for the purpose of security. Imagine the
military/gov equipment which is always a generation or two ahead of
commercial markets.

If anyone recalls this competition you can correct my vagueness :-)
