[Hermit 2] To ensure legibility in broken clients this mail has been formated to 72 columns

[Charlie 1] Hermit, your email tool isn't wrapping lines properly. This causes problems for
those of us with standards-compliant mail utilities.

[Hermit 2] RFC-821 and successors limits line length to "1000 characters or less" (none of
my lines have exceeded that length) and places the onus for formatting (including line
wrapping) on the client. As previously suggested to Eugen (refer Reply 9 at http://virus.lucifer.com/bbs/index.php?board=51;action=display;threadid=25358;start=0),
I recomend examination of the standards for yourself before you discuss their contents.
Presentation, including line wrapping, is the responsibility of the mail client, not the
originator.

[Charlie 1] Standards may be dumb or sub-optimal, but they're there, and the
convenience afforded by everybody sticking to an established one outweighs the pain of
shifting to a new one unless it's *very* good indeed. (Hence my request for dumb ASCII
and hard line breaks every 72-79 characters.)

[Hermit 2] Having been a member of numerous IETF committees, and author of a number
of standards documents, I agree. The most serious trouble with writing standards which
I have experienced recently, is that apparently some people do not read them, but simply
cite what they erroneously believe the standards contain, in attempted support of their
arguments.

[Hermit 2] I call this a logical error.

[Hermit 2] PS The relevant and applicable RFCs include RFC 821, RFC 822, RFC 934, STD 11,
RFC 1049, RFC 1341, RFC 1342, RFC 1343, RFC 1512, RFC 1521, RFC 1522, RFC 1590,
RFC 2045, RFC 2046, RFC 2047, RFC 2048 and RFC 2049. An appendix in RFC 2049
describes differences and changes from previous versions.
