I used to answer and help on Usenet groups in the past. It was a good
way for me to gain more practice writing, teaching, keeping my
knowledge fresh or learning new things. What finally killed that for
me was that spam increased by orders of magnitude every time I wrote
something on Usenet.
For a while, my solution was to put a fake address in my return, but
the last time I did that, a group of German sysadmins jumped on me
publically saying that putting a fake address was extremely
anti-social and accused me of contributing to the garbage over
Internet. So I stopped contributing to Usenet groups.
