sorry about the lag time...but re:

" ...All of the above not withstanding, one of the general mechanisms
that
is thought to lead to lifespan extension through caloric restriction
is a reduction in metabolism, exhibiting itself as a slightly decreased
body tempterature, leading to lower free radical production and
increased longevity. But the details of this are still largely
unknown.

i'm not a medical person, i just experiment on myself a lot. i had
always assumed that caloric restriction assisted longevity since when
your body is not processing what you consume, it's organs seem to spend
more time purifying and rejeuvenating the body. i'm guessing this
based on experiences with fasting: consistently after 3 or 4 days of
fasting, the body purges itself. the urine becomes very dark for a
while, the tongue gets coated, sweat stinks, skin feels like guk is
coming out of it (this is documented in ayurvedic texts). this does not
feel like it has anything to do with decreased metabolism, since during
the third day of a fast, there seems to be an experience of highly
increased energy (this is not true at all, the opposite is true during
later stages of longer fasts). there is some documentation that during a
fasting state some organs actually somewhat change function (i'm very
out of date here though maybe)... so maybe general ongoing caloric
restriction has a similar but less drastic and more sustainable effect?
