I thought he was stretching a little too hard for a plot device.
Perhaps after the book came out he was taken to task by
a number of mathematics nerds, and so decided to drop
that gag for the movie. This story was close enough to
hard sci-fi that he needed to have all those picky little
details exactly right. He would hafta know there would
be a veritable army of nerds who would memorize the
script, reciting it verbatim at nerd parties.

That was my first DVD as well. But I didnt realize there was a directors
cut with Foster speaking. I know what I will be doing for the next couple
