Hubbard was in the 1940's a follower of the English magician Aleister
Crowley. Hubbard and Jack Parsons, one of the founders of the Jet
Propulsion Labs, were both Crowley followers, although Crowley apparently
thought little of them both. Hubbard ran off with Parsons' wife, and
Parsons blew himself up in a lab accident. See the book "L. Ron
Hubbard: Madman or Messiah" by his son and a former ranking Scientologist
whose name I forget. Hubbard believed SOME bull dookey, but not the stuff
he was spouting, which was initially lifted from Korzybski's General
Semantics and various Eastern and Western philosophies. It was very
profitable, tho - at one point he was pulling down probably $100 million a
year...
