Steve Allen started out his book "Dumbth" by speculating why not-exactly
retarded adults would write fan letters to Morris the cat (of commercial
fame back in the 70s and 80s). I've heard that soap opera stars routinely
get jeered or cheered by people (in supermarkets and the like) depending on
whether the character they play is a hero or villain. And actors who've
played doctors on TV (Robert Young, for instance) used to run into people
asking them for medical advice.

I've never been able to understand this phenomenon (but then I've never been
able to understand the attractions of worshipping invisible, undetectable
and easily-pissed-off-though-sometimes-benevolent-because-they're-mysterious
superior beings).
