Better yet, replace it with nothing at all, and allow private contracts
to handle such things. As you point out, extending legal marriage to
same-sex couples is just a band-aid on the cancerous tumor that is the
cultural institution of marriage. It fails to cover many other cases
where I should have the same rights: say my sister and I want to share
a household, file taxes jointly, adopt a child, make medical decisions
for each other, etc. Even same-sex domestic partnership laws don't
cover that. How about myself and three lovers who want to start a
Heinlein-esque "line" family? There is simply no rational position
on the issue other than that the government should butt out entirely.
