This is part of the downside of our present level of
competitiveness for even the basics of life. As long as your
ass is own the line (to put it bluntly) you might be less
inclined to root for those (human or otherwise) significantly
more competitive than yourself. If, on the other hand, the
brilliance of each sentient is more directly of huge benefit to
you, then obviously the increase of said brilliance in whatever
from is something you wholeheartedly support.
