I think it is great that Eliezer be so focused, and dismiss as
distraction his involvement in the commercialization of intermediary
steps.
One possibility would be that selected entrepreneurs be allowed, under
certain conditions (NDA, limited context of use), to turn some parts
into commercial ventures along the way, while feeding back to SIAI
part of the possible revenue (and possibly the experience they might
have got from using the part). *They* would make the necessary work
to make the part "profitable", while SIAI would be under no pressure
to do so.
