Extropes,
At the beginning of July last, I got a new Dell PC
with Windows Millenium Edition. Then, on Aug 18th, I
left for three months in Canada-- Powell River, BC.
On that trip, I took the computer, set it up, and
hooked it up to cable (Shaw Cable).
Then came Sept 11th.
Around October 1st, I got on the computer and was
trying to figure out how to change the picture that
appears on the screen when I first boot up, the one
before the windows desktop background settles in. I
had changed it once but I couldn't remember how I did
it, so I was fumbling around trying to rediscover the
path, when I stumbled on something strange.
I opened the desktop file by clicking, in order:
My Computer/Local Disk (C:)/WINDOWS/All Users/Desktop
and clicked on Tools, then Folder Options..., then the
tab for File Types.
I later realized that the specific folder is
unimportant. It the same for all windows folders, in
the tools menu under folder options, and then the tab
for file types.
A little flashlight appears--I think I've seen it
before associated with a "Browse" function--and waves
back and forth, and then a list of what appears to be
file types appears. But, and here's the point, the
first item on the list shows the following:
Under "Extensions" it says
1001627143ATTACKS_WORLD_TRADE_CENTER_NYR111
and under "File Types" it says
1001627143ATTACKS_WORLD_TRADE_CENTER_NYR111 File
Clearly, this could not have been on the computer when
I got it, and must have been loaded into the computer
sometime after Sept 11th. (The computer in question
is utterly insecure--I have no security
issues--protected only by Norton anti-virus.)
I did a search in both files and text for
1001627143ATTACKS_WORLD_TRADE_CENTER_NYR111 File
but nothing shows up.
It's more than a little creepy.
Any of the IT-savvy list members care to speculate as
to what's going on?
Best, Jeff Davis
