Building Attack-Proof Buildings

An idea for protecting buildings from catastrophic collisions by
coating them with granular materials, more or less. Punch a bag
of sand, what happens? Not much. Also possibly useful for minimizing
earthquake damage (an evolution of shockcrete?) and protecting
spacecraft from meteorites(!).
