Of course "self-sufficiency" is somewhat over-rated
-- does it harvest its own power?
-- does it manufacture its own replacement chips?
-- does it adjust its meme-sets for increased survival capabilities
(e.g. asteroid & supernova avoidance)?
etc. etc.
We shouldn't get carried away because we have gotten machines
up to the point where they are aware of "internal" pain and
learn to live with it. We will be making progress when they
learn behaviors that predict its probability and develop
behaviors that avoid its development.
