Nature this week has two articles in it discussing the effectiveness
of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofin, indomethacin and
sulindac sulphide) decrease the production of the alpha-beta42
peptide which is believed to be one of the causitive factors
in Alzheimer's Disease.
The consumption of NSAIDs should be balanced with their gastrointestinal
and renal toxicity associated with long term consumption. The mechanism
by which the drugs are reducing AB42 appears to be independent of their
impact on cycloxygenase activity leaving open the possibility that new
drugs may be found that have the same effect without the current toxicity
problems.
