Get on the web and assign your own seat. The exit rows have more leg room
because they need that row to be wide enough for everybody to walk through
if necessary. Do not choose an exit row that has a second exit row behind
it. These seats will have their reclining disabled so that they cannot lean
back and block the exit row behind it. Avoid bulkhead seats with a wall in
front of them. Since they do not have a seat in front of them, you do not
have as much leg room.

Or do what I do. Fly so much in your consulting business that you get
Platinum frequent flyer miles and get bumped up to first class for free! If
you do get bumped up to first class, choose the last row of seats. They can
recline all the time, even during take-offs and landings, because there is
no one behind them who would be blocked by a reclined seat.

(Also, a vegetarian diet seems to leave me with more seat room than most
people.)
