human life in space

It seems one limitation to life is due to the double helix DNA structure
vulnerability to radiation. This is a problem for space travel even within
the solar system and in deep space must be even a greater problem.
Has anyone looked at another gene configuration that would result in "human"
type bodies as we know them. Perhaps a triple double helix that is self
repairing. Might end evolution though.
