The usual explanation outside the US, and among many analysts within it,
is: `the business of the US'.

Alternative explanations are fairly thin (`Because we're such really nice
guys'? `Because we're the silverback primates with the biggest teeth and
claws just now'? `Will you have Jesus the Lord with that'? `It seemed like
a good idea at the time'?). Economic contest often *is* the bottom line.
