You're missing the point. The target of this legislation
is hardware manufacturers. They can't take your Linix
disks, but they can make sure no computer built after
2003 will run them. This authorizes them to do almost
anything to make that impossible. Figure every chip
after this goes through will have Windows in unpatchable
firmware with all programs required to run in a Java
VM sandbox or something to that effect. Drives will
be required to implement some new copy protection scheme
that bars reading old disks. Yeah, it'll stop progress
but do you think the gov't cares about that?
