The logic is that some companies "appears" to be trying to cut costs to the
stock market. The company I worked at a few years ago just had its first
layoff. They were making their usual net profits and they weren't really
affected by this dot.com bubble. I have a feeling a lot of companies are
doing this just to please investors and use this as an excuse to trim off
the non-productive elements within the company (note: I didn't say ALL, I
said SOME).
