Ah, that is the problem. Most people use 64,000 or 16 million colors.
The 256 color setting uses 256 fixed color values, while internet
graphics in GIF format each have their own optimized palette of colors,
which may or may not be the same colors as the display uses in its own
fixed palette. Using 16 million colors allows you to see JPG images as
well as the GIF images as they are intended.
