Positive ions can be held together in an electrostatic
trap by the very force that normally pushes them apart.
The surprising effect was observed in a cloud of argon
ions and could lead to much more accurate mass spectrometers,
according to Daniel Zajfman and colleagues at the Weizmann Institute
in Israel (H Pedersen et al 2001 Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 055001).
