A while back on this list, someone had mentioned the drug ALT-711 in regards
to reversing glycation -- a process whereby glucose (a sugar) bund to
proteins to create stiff formations in, well, just about all of the body.
The stiff formations are pretty permanent and lead to all sorts of nasty
effects, including stiffness in heart muscle, skin wrinkles, and loss of
flexibility in blood vessels. ALT-711 breaks these down. To my knowledge,
there's currently nothing else that undoes this kind of damage.
I've just read in the current issue of _Life Extension_ -- August 2001, not
yet online -- that Alteon, Inc., the maker of ALT-711, is now starting Phase
IIb trials. (Also, and as many might have guessed, the drug passed Phase I
and Phase IIa trials. In fact, results of the latter were presented in
March of this year.)
Anyhow, I think this is very good new.
